Cultural Night an opportunity to see many wonderful venues free of charge

One of the greatest cultural successes has been Culture Night now in its 7th year, taking place this year on Friday September 21st, museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artist’s studios, cultural centres and more, will open their doors late free of charge for a night of entertainment, discovery and adventure. Although originally confined to Dublin the event now takes place in 34 towns and cities through Ireland. For more information visit http://www.culturenight.ie/

Here are a few of my choices from the list of Dublin events.

Casino at Marino

A Greek Temple in the parklands with three floors which surprisingly contains 16 rooms some of which are beautifully decorated. The ‘secret plans and clever tricks’ of this remarkable building are explained by OPW guides.

City Hall

City Hall, an outstanding example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is world-renowned, hosts a multimedia exhibition tracing the history of Dublin from its foundation in Viking and Norman times into the vibrant city of today.

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies – Dunsink Observatory

An evening in Dublin’s historical observatory at Dunsink, once home to our greatest scientist and amateur poet, Sir William Rowan Hamilton and now part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.

Freemasons’ Hall

Visitors will be welcomed to the esoterically styled meeting rooms of this Victorian gem, the purpose built headquarters of the Freemasons in Ireland. An excellent tour which I recently done.

Glasnevin Museum

Glasnevin Museum will be open free of charge from 5pm to 9pm on Culture Night. In addition the architect of the Museum, Hugh Maguire, will give a talk entitled ‘The Architecture of Glasnevin Museum’ at 7pm. There will be no charge for the talk, however booking is essential as places are limited. Guided walking tours at 5.30 and 6pm – booking is essential.

Italian Institute of Culture

Gerardo Placido and Teatro Emigrato. A truly theatrical event with the well-known actor Gerardo Placido and his new Dublin based acting group Teatro Emigrato. In English and Italian. A wonderful surprise!

Number 29 Georgian House Museum

Come for a free visit to the Georgian House museum and experience this unique visitor attraction at a time when it is usually closed to the public.

The Ark – A Cultural Centre for Children

Families can enjoy theatre or music performances in this gorgeous purpose-built children’s cultural centre, half hourly from 6pm to 8.30pm. Get creative with an artist in the workshop, every 30 minutes from 5.15pm – 7.15pm.
