Fidget Feet’s ‘Caught’ at Absolut Fringe – a superb aerial dance show.

Fidget Feet performing at Loughcrew Opera Festival 2012

My third show in Absolut Fringe 2012 and my first time to visit the Lir Studio space one of the many venues for the extensive programme for Absolut Fringe shows. Fidget Feet a Donegal based aerial dance group performed Caught. Earlier this year I saw a very different but wonderful show by Fidget Feet in an outdoor setting at the LoughCrew Opera Festival.

The premise for ‘Caught‘ is a young girl in a red hooded jacket making her way through a forest where she is befriended by a stranger on her journey.  The stage is set in a forest of ropes hanging from the gantry, against a background of changing visual projections with props in the foreground combined and suitably unsettling music creates a realist setting for a dark and scary forest.  As the girl in the red jacket arrives on stage she is startled by a text on her phone, as she sits to respond (her text visibly projected behind her) her phone and text message receive interference, and suddenly ‘something’ descends from what appeared to be a nest height in the forest of ropes.

Confronted by this wolf/man the girl in the red jacket begins an amazing areal dance between the pair. The interaction between both performers was seamless as they transferred between the numerous ropes suspended across the stage; it was as if they were on the ground. A word of praise also for the third member of the show unseen to the audience who used his own body weight and a series of pullies from the wings to move and suspend the dancers in the air at various times in the show. The dance movements combined with the haunting score and the wonderful visual projections provided a powerful, sensual and at times very moving show with excellent execution. The grace, aerial and physical skill of both dancers was outstanding and captivates you from beginning to end.

The show runs from September 12th – 15th at 18.30 in The Lir, Studio 1 on Pearse Street.

Ticket price €13 – €11 for concession. Duration of show 60minutes
