After a short illness the actor David Kelly died in Dublin yesterday he was 82 years.
His career started in The Abbey Theatre at a very young age, before moving into TV and film. His many roles included Rashers Tierney a down and out in the 1980 RTE series of Strumpet City.
He played the grandfather in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and also in, Into The West, and the grandpa in Stardust with Eva Green. He had roles in the RTE series Glenroe, feature films The Italian Job, Agent Cody Banks 2, Waking Ned and many more. I had the opportunity to twice work with him once on the BBC series Ballykissangle and in 2003 comedy Laws of Attraction in which he played the “priest” who married Pierce Brosan and Julianne Moore.
On stage he will always be associated with Samuel Beckett because of his legendary performance in the title role of Krapp’s Last Tape
In 2005 he won an Irish Film and Television Academy lifetime achievement award.
But for many of my generation he will best remember for his 10 minute appearance in Faulty Towers playing Reilly the Irish builder.
