Neil Jordan’s ‘Byzantium’ Ardmore Studio’s first feature film in more than a year

Neil Jordan’s ‘Byzantium’ will commence principle photography on location in Hastings, (UK), next week, before moving to Ireland in late-December until the beginning of February.

’Byzantium’ is a co-production between Parallel Films and UK production company Number 9. It will shoot in Ardmore Studios and around the Dublin and Wicklow and possible the Galway area.

2011 has been a very quiet year in Ardmore Studios; 2010 accounts for the studios revealed a 40% reduction in operating profits and 2011 accounts are almost certain to show a deficit. Byzantium will be the first feature to shoot in the studios this year.  The loss of the second series of Camelot left a major gap in Ardmore’s bookings this year, but its inability to attract in other production should cause some concern.

Worldwide the level of film production is down all over for the past 5 years, but questions must be asked how come 70 miles up the M1 the Northern Ireland Film Screen  the Film/TV sector has been experiencing something of a boom in recent years, while in the Republic less and less Producers are choosing not to bring their productions to the Republic?

Byzantium’ written by Moira Buffini  it tells the story of a mother and daughter vampire duo, who form a deadly pact. It arrival even this late in the year will be welcomed by the many unemployed film crew members. It will star Saoirse Ronan, British actress Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Quantum of Solace) and ‘X-Men’ star Caleb Landry and Sam Riley (Brighton Rock)

The film has received funding from Irish Film Board and the UK Film Council, overall  budget is estimated to be €8 million.
