The Guard set to break €3 million at the Irish box office

The Guard is continuing to do very well at the box office To date The Guard , staring Brendan Gleeson and  Don Cheadle, has taken €2.6 million at the Irish box office, and likely to become the most successful Irish film at the domestic box office since the Ken Leach-directed The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

The Guard opening last weekend in the US and Sony, its US distributor, plans to make the film available to more than 50 US cinemas over the coming weeks. The film will be released in the UK on August 19th. With 2011 proving to be one of the worst years for Irish film production, hopefully the positive feedback from the success of the Guard will bring see the return of more US producers in 2012.

Commenting on the success of the Guard, Producer Ed Guiney said. “When you make an Irish film you want it to be enjoyed by Irish audiences, and we’re delighted that they are continuing to go and see it.”

The most successful Irish film of all time at the box office remains John Carney’s 2006 musical film Once which took over €14,000,000 ($20,000,000) worldwide at the box office.
