The Guard, a role taylored for Brendan Gleeson

The Guard has done really well at the box office in Ireland in its first week. It managed to knock Bridesmaids off the top spot by pulling in €528,817 – no mean feat at all. With box office figures like that it could potentially be as successful as Michael Collins or Intermission. A strong marketing campaign and Brendan Gleeson have certainly helping to get film-goers in.

The Guard offered much potential; Brendan Gleeson puts in a good performance and captured that local crusty Guard, which we all know very well. The various locations were well chosen and really set the film up. There were some laughs but too many sub plots that didn’t go anywhere and a cameo by a well-known actor that added nothing to the film what so ever. Even its title The Guard  is unimaginative and is an indication of its limited targeted audience is. The real tests for this movie will come when it gets a British release next month.
